Buckland Chapel

ABOUT US

We are a Christian charitable trust which owns and looks after this beautiful Chapel. We want it to be a warm, welcoming and accessible place for everyone in the community. It is used by community groups, by St Andrew's Church and St. Andrew's School. During the pandemic it has been open as a Food Hub run by Buckland Cares.

In all we do we aim to reflect Jesus's message of generosity, friendship, kindness and compassion to everyone in the community.

The original Chapel was a Baptist Chapel in the heart of Buckland Monachorum village. When it ceased to be a place of worship, the Baptist Church converted it into a youth hostel by extending the hall (which was listed) to provide dormitories, showers and toilets and installing a catering kitchen.

In 2011 the property became available to buy and St Andrew’s Church seized the opportunity to provide a community facility which would also be available for the church to use for youth and children’s activities. St Andrews raised sufficient funds to buy the building, placing it in a separate Trust which is not part of the Church of England. The Chapel is therefore self-funding mainly through hall hire, donations and grants.

The Chapel was an instant success in the village, providing a venue for a “Kiddiwinks” group, Art group, Ballet classes, Community Choir, bread making club, craft club and many more activities.

We continue to repair and improve the property in order to maximise its usefulness and to ensure that the Chapel is accessible to all.
